You Are What You Eat (pt1)

The food we consume on a daily basis is one of the most worthwhile investments we can make. It gives us energy and nutrients to keep us healthy and active. Fruits and vegetables should be an integral part of our diets: however, some fruits and vegetables may be laden with chemicals and toxins.

Below are the "DIRTY DOZEN" fruits and veggies that contain the highest amount of pesticides:
Peaches
Apples
Nectarines
Strawberries
Cherries
Imported Grapes
Pears
Sweet Bell Peppers
Celery
Kale
Lettuce
Carrots

In order to decrease the consumption of the toxins, try shopping at our local, organic farms. If organic is not worth the investment in your health, the least you can do is thoroughly wash, rinse and scrub your produce prior to eating them.

Chiropractic and the NFL

I thought this video was appropriate considering this past weekend was opening day in the NFL. Did you know that all but a couple of NFL teams have a chiropractor on staff and most NFL players utilize chiropractors regularly.

I have had the privilege to work with some NFL players while I worked at Indy Spine and Rehab for 2 years. It was fun and also made me a huge Colts fan. It was awesome to know that what we did in the clinic helped them perform on the field.

3 Types of Athletic Pain

In our clinic, we treat all types of aches and pains. When they are sports related injuries, the pains can be classified as:

1. Acute - For instance when you sprain an ankle while playing basketball. Acute pain is signal to us that something is wrong and we shouldn't continue with that activity

2. Nagging - these pains are caused by acute injuries that haven't healed properly or aches caused by overuse, muscular imbalances and/or improper technique in the sport

3. Chronic - pain that is nagging and lasts more than six months. Chronic pain can be debilitating as it becomes ingrained in the psyche. Typically, treatment for chronic pain last longer than for acute pain patients. Goal oriented active care with assurance and some passive treatment has been demonstrated as the most effective means to treat it.

Are you suffering from any of these types of pain?
Call Cajun Spine @(337)261-2669 to see how we can help you with your sports related pain.

Core Strength and Less Back Pain

While recently skimming this month's issue of Men's Health I came across this information:

"Improving core strength may decrease the severity of chronic back pain" according to a review in Physical Therapy.

In my experience, most patients with chronic low back pain have weak core muscles upon examination and atrophied and fatty deep intrinsic spinal stabilizers on MRI studies.

Spinal-stability exercises like the ones we prescribe in our office can increase endurance and strength in the muscles that protect and support the spine. If you can increase the endurance of the stabilizers and allow them to take pressure off of the spine, less pain occurs.

If you are suffering from chronic low back pain and would like to schedule an appointment to see how are manual therapies and core stability programs can help you call us at (337) 261-2669

And So it Begins

Greetings everyone!

As the temperatures begin to peak and then cool off, race season begins. We are anxiously looking forward to getting out to some of the local events again this season to stretch out you runners and triathletes.

The first event of the season will be this weekend at the Miles Perret Games of Acadiana Mini- Triathlon. Just click on the link for registration details. It is limited to 175 participants so don't wait to register. This event is held in conjunction with the Games of Acadiana held in the Cajun Dome.

The Miles Perret Center has played a supportive role for my immediate family. They have provided information, comfort and resources not only for my mother who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer this year but also for my younger siblings who watched her battle it. My mom has undergone chemo and radiation and is now doing well. So go celebrate life with the kids at the Games, " Tri" out the race or just go to the survivor walk to participate or show support.

We looking forward to seeing you out there!

Conservative Management of Neck Pain

Chiropractic Care of Neck Pain
During your visit, We will perform an examination to locate the source of your pain and will ask you questions about your current symptoms and remedies you may have already tried.

The doctors at Cajun Spine will also do physical and neurological exams. In the physical exam, your doctor will observe your posture, range of motion, and physical condition, noting movement that causes pain. Your doctor will feel your spine, note its curvature and alignment, and feel for muscle spasm. A check of your shoulder area is also in order. During the neurological exam, your doctor will test your reflexes, muscle strength, other nerve changes, and pain spread.

If warranted, diagnostic imaging be ordered.

The chiropractors at Cajun Spine and Sport are conservative care doctors; their scope of practice does NOT include the use of drugs or surgery.

Neck Adjustments
A neck adjustment (also known as a cervical manipulation) is a precise procedure applied to the joints of the neck, usually by hand.  When indicated a neck adjustment works to improve the mobility of the spine and to restore range of motion; it can also increase movement of the adjoining muscles. Patients typically notice an improved ability to turn and tilt the head, and a reduction of pain, soreness, and stiffness.

Based on your condition, a program of care will be suggested. The treatment plan may combine more than one type of treatment, depending on your personal needs. In addition to manipulation, the treatment plan may include mobilization, soft tissue therapy and/or rehabilitative exercises.

Research Supporting Chiropractic Care
One of the most recent reviews of scientific literature found evidence that patients with chronic neck pain enrolled in clinical trials reported significant improvement following chiropractic spinal manipulation.

As part of the literature review, published in the March/April 2007 issue of the Journal of
Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
, the researchers reviewed nine previously published trials and found “high-quality evidence” that patients with chronic neck pain showed significant pain-level improvements following spinal manipulation. No trial group was reported as having remained unchanged, and all groups showed positive changes up to 12 weeks post-treatment.
